Rich Daly: The Mad Scientist

SCIPIO – Rich Daly likes you to think he doesn’t have it together. As he inches his snowmobile to the starting line and slips his goggles over his glasses, he wants you to think he’s some crazy old man. He’ll be wearing two different color gloves. His snowmobile will have a random piece of duct tape on it, just to plant the seed in his opponent’s mind that he doesn’t belong. He wants his opponents to believe that he isn’t a competitor, when in all actuality he’s probably the stiffest competition they’ll face all day.

“There’s a lot of psychology I use,” Daly said. “I’ll deliberately put duct tape on something to throw these guys off and they won’t find out until the top of the hill.”

MSRA Wraps Up Season At Christie Mountain

Duluth MN- The Midwest Snowmobile Racing Association concluded its race season with a tour stop in the state of Wisconsin.  Christie Mountain provided the perfect venue for some fantastic, high speed, uphill, bar-to-bar racing action!

What seemed to be the entire town of Bruce, WI, turned out to watch all of the action and they were not disappointed!  To start out the day, fans seated on the deck got to feel the excitement of being right on the starting line for the Hilldrags.  Additional sponsor money has been added to the purse for the Pro and Semi Pro Open Hill Drag classes – helping to draw even more competition to this growing sport.  The 120x class took place in what used to be the tubing park and even provided the little guys and gals some fun racing action!  Racers then tackled the Hillcross hill to showcase the next generation of racers.

With 50+ degree temperatures and a hot pit area that had a ton of sleds ready to take on the longest track to date, the Hillcross racing was fantastic.   Racing was fast and non-stop.  Racers enjoyed several double jumpes and a massive triple jump at the top of the hill that everyone loved to watch. That triple was highlighted by a snowmobile lockout competition which saw Alex Roufs’ lose his record-breaking jump from the past year to Kurt Bauerly, who jumped 166 feet.  Roufs was not to be out done – he took his second jump and eclipsed 178’ to reclaim his crown.  Jordan Sherwood finished third in our competition with a fantastic distance of 150’.  The day way capped off with a great awards ceremony in the chalet with several classes winning free schwag provided by C&L Budweiser of Brainerd, MN.
