Comment on Can A 500cc Race Sled Save Snowmobile Racing? by akrider

A 500cc sled is a good idea, particularly one that runs on pump gas. What the OEM's need to do is sell production based raced sleds and sell them just like they used to back in the 80's and 90's. The race program is a bazaar concept. You have to fill out an application, and then pay for a sled without even knowing what it is going to be like. Why can't the OEM's just sell race sleds like MX bikes or race quads? You want to race MX? Great, go down to the dealer and buy a CR, KX RM or YZ right off the showroom floor. If the OEM's want more control than create a program where the racer can qualify for a discount.

Production based sleds should lower the cost of racing for everyone. IMO, the part of the reason for the demise of Sno-X is the specialization of the sleds. When it first started, anyone with a trail sled go go out and race. Now you need a limited build race sled to be competitive. I see the same thing happening in XC racing and that is too bad. We need to get back to what racing was in the 80's and 90's where you raced consumer sleds. Hopefully Cat's move to the production based Pro-Cross chassis is a step in that direction.

Thanks for the comments Mike. Ya, I wasn't doubting the fact that it was Blair's last mod, I was just relating what the sign said. :)

I had the opportunity to see Blair do some amazing things on that mod at the last Indoor Super Snowcross race in Toronto. He was taking the entire backstretch in three jumps - triple, triple and double into the corner. Amazing.
